E-C Translation Under The Guidance Of The Dynamic Equivalence Theory

The text to be translated is selected from an American novel One of Ours.One of Ours was written by Willa Cather,an American female writer in the 20 th century,which was published in 1922 and won the Pulitzer prize in 1923.The novel is featured with distinctive characteristics of the era and the region.It pays attention to the description of the daily trivial life of immigrants in the western United States,depicting the psychological activities of the protagonist Claude in detail.The reason why the novel is selected for translation is that the author has a strong interest in literature.In the process of translation,the author first analyzes the textual characteristics of One of Ours and finds that it mainly consists of narration and description.Compared with other texts,the novel focuses on depicting characters,plot and environments.In depicting the characters,a variety of descriptive methods are used and the characters' action,psychology and other characteristics are captured to show their personality.In terms of depicting the plot,trivial incidents and occasional skirmishes in daily life are described and stories are narrated in a smoothing way.In terms of environmental description,the natural environment is combined with the social environment.The characters' identity,personality and psychological activities are highlighted in the environmental description,which also creates the atmosphere and promotes the development of the plot.According to the textual characteristics,the author chooses Eugene Nida's dynamic equivalence theory as the theoretical guide for this translation practice,aiming to reproduce the textual style of the original text.This thesis consists of six parts.The first part is the introduction,which introduces the background and significance of the project,research methods and the text.The second part is the theoretical basis,introducing Nida's equivalence theory.The third part describes the translation process,including the preparation for translation,description of the problems encountered in the translation and the proofreading after translation.The part of pre-translation introduces how the appropriate type of text is chosen according to the author's interest and learning situation,how to analyze and understand the text and how to choose the translation theory to guide the translation practice,etc.The problems encountered in thetranslation mainly consist of dealing with unfamiliar words,the collocation of words and understanding the textual cohesion and the logical relationship among the parts of sentences.The process of the post-translation mainly refers to checking the quality of the translation several times,reading the translation repeatedly for further modification,and modifying the punctuations,format and other details.The fourth part discusses the problems encountered in the translation including dealing with complex syntax,culture-related expression and the reproduction of style,etc.The fifth part is the focus of this thesis.Based on the dynamic equivalence theory and combined with translation practice,the author expounds how to achieve equivalence in the translation at the lexical,syntactic and stylistic level.Among them,the lexical level mainly includes three aspects: analysis of the meaning of word,conversion of part of speech and style selection of words;at the syntactic level,the thesis mainly analyzes the processing of four types of sentence patterns: long sentences,end-weight sentences,elliptical sentences and passive sentences.At the style level,it mainly analyzes the detailed description,beautiful environmental description and concise language of the novel.The sixth part is the conclusion,which summarizes the gains and losses in this translation practice.Through this translation practice,the author gets the following inspirations: firstly,dynamic equivalence theory focuses on the naturalness of expression,which can be used to guide the translation of novels;secondly,due to the differences between English and Chinese,translation can only achieve relative equivalence,but not absolute equivalence.
