Stylistic Variations Of EST And Its Instructions For EST Translation

EST (English for Science and Technology) is a special style or genre of English. It came into being and developed accompanying the appearance and development of science and technology. This thesis attempts to discuss the stylistic variations of EST, with special emphasis on meeting the needs of development of science and technology on the aspects of vocabulary, syntax and discourse, showing unique characteristics of EST itself and displaying some new features of EST.This thesis is composed of four chapters.Chapter one is a general survey of EST. It mainly attempts to give a definition of EST and summarize characteristics of EST in vocabulary, syntax and discourse; the author also distinguishes EST from literary English from the aesthetic perspective.Chapter two is the focus of this thesis. It probes into stylistic variations of EST at lexical, syntactic and textual levels, and analyzes every level in details. Stylistic variations of EST are without exception developing with the increasingly advancing of science and technology.Chapter three analyzes the reasons of stylistic variations of EST. It is mainly divided into two reasons including internal cause and external cause from the philosophical perspective. It is through the analysis of its reasons that we may understand more clearly the development of EST and enormous changes it has brought for human languages.The last chapter is the instruction to EST translation gained from the stylistic variations of EST. On one hand, this chapter shows that variation of EST has a great effect on the promotion of aesthetic values of EST; on the other hand, it is suggested that higher requirements be raised for the translator. He is expected to own bilingual competence and the profound professional knowledge. Particularly, he should be capable of aesthetic ability and insight.
