The International Aids Of Spring And Autumn Period

The Spring and Autumn Period is a very special time in Chinese history. At that time, the monarchical power decayed, and the dependencies expanded. Many vassal nations existed side by side, therefore, the international relationships were complex. During the wars of annexation and dilation, some bigger countries grew up. They provoked wars to get the supremacy and interests. Almost all of the countries of that period had been involved in the wars. The tangled warfare made the society chaos. The social production was ruined and disasters occurred frequently. In order to solve these difficulties, numerous assistances including economic aids, political aids, humane aids and military aids, were born. All of these assistances were important for that time.The main body of this thesis has discussed the various kinds of assistances from four parts.The first part has narrated the situation in Spring and Autumn Period. It includes two parts. The first part is about the royalty of Zhou. When Zhou dynasty moved to east, it lost a great quantity of land in the west. The king's power was on the decline. He couldn't control the seigneurs who used to be his subjects. All the society was in confusion. Meanwhile, the dependencies'strength increased, and they had more and more power. The big dependencies became super nations by annexational wars. As a consequence, they provoked wars to conquer other countries.The second part is the classification of the historical data. The assistances of that period can be classified into four types: humane assistance, economic assistance, political assistance and military assistance. Humane assistance is that a country gave help for humane consideration. Political assistance is that one country gave help or support for political aims. Economic assistance is that when anther country was in hardness (take famine for example), one country gave out help (relief, donation and so on) for humane reasons or other specific purposes. Military assistance is that, when one country was intruded by others or was in civil war, the third part gave military help, for example, arms, material assets or forces.The third part is the analysis of assistances'aim and motivations. This paper has analyzed them from four parts. Firstly, it discussed the relationship between assistances and"Li". Relieving activities should accord with Li which was regulated since West Zhou. Zhou Li had given a detailed record. In Spring and Autumn Period, all of the countries had to act under"Li"request. Secondly, it has discussed the relationship between assistance and hegemony. The super countries provided various aids for the reasons of hegemony, humanism, justice, virtue and so on. When one country became overlord, it had the incumbency to protect and assist the dependencies; meanwhile, the dependencies had to offer tribute and help to the overlord. Thirdly, it discussed the relationship between assistance and political marriage. The affianced nations could give help to each other whenever necessary for their close relationships. Therefore, many countries formed federation through political marriage in order to expand their strength. Fourthly, it discussed the relationship between assistance and alignment. By making pledge, the participants formed partner relationships which played a very important role in the warfare.The fourth part is the summary of all sorts of the assistance. The continual aids reflected the historical activities which is helpful to known the history. These activities brought great influence for that and following dynasties. On one hand, these activities advantaged promoting economic communication, accelerating national amalgamation, relaxing people'sufferings, resuming and developing social productions. On the other hand, the military assistance within blocs enlarged the warfare's force, which destroyed the social production. Long-term assistances provided a lot of experiences of salvation. The complex international relationship and hegemonic infestation was similar to contemporary society. The assistant activities can be used for reference today's.
