During the important period of changes of China's modern history, Chang Chih-tung's ideas on industrial education is typical when the surviving need of our country and nation is facing invasions of foreign great powers, and it also shows too much the thought that feudal bureaucrat nurtured in Chinese traditional culture try to seek the way of making our country rich and building up its military might with limited knowledge of foreign cultures. So, this proposition is a vivid case of revealing Chinese modern education surviving and developing in the crevice between feudal culture and foreign culture, studying it can enrich the contents of china's modern education history further, and also provides historical experiences for us in deep thinking how contemporary Chinese education promotes the survival and development of our country and nation better. Therefore, the research on Chang Chih-tung's ideas has both historic and realistic significance.Though the case study of Chang Chih-Tung's ideas and practice on industrial education, this study tries to find out the factors that is limiting the development of Chinese education. With the method of collecting document, analytical comparison, interview, this study makes an exploring research on the cultural background of Chang Chih-Tung's ideas on industrial education, the social basis of implementation of Chang Chih-Tung's ideas on industrial education, and its wide and profound influence in China's modern history and the later ages.The thesis is made up of the foreword and the text, the text includes six parts:Part I: Brief introduction about Chang Chih-Tung's life and his educating practice.Part II: Analysis of the process of the formation and the development of Chang Chih-Tung's ideas on industrial education. Part III: Analysis of the faction of industrial education, establishment of the industrial school, the education of studying abroad, running newspapers, and so on, in Chang Chih-Tung's view.Part IV: Analysis of the influence of Chang Chih-Tung's ideas on industrial education: its wide and profound influence in China's modern history and the later ages, and its influence on vocational education ideologists in the early years of Mingo Period.Part V: Comparison of Chang Chih-Tung's ideas with its practice and analysis of the reason of the comparing result in three aspects such as culture, politics, and the law of education.Part VI: Analysis of the factors that is limiting the development of Chinese education, making clear the reference which can be used for contemporary Chinese education.
