Research On Adverbs In ZhanGuoCe

Research on Chinese should be based on particular times which isbased on monograph. ZhanGuoCe, a significant historical works in earlierQin Dynasty and featured by its rich linguistic material, is able to reflectthe features of oral Chinese in ZhanGuo Dynasty. It is regarded as a mainlinguistic material on which we research Chinese. Many academicians'research on the works is limited in a circle of its literature style anddebate skills ignoring its grammar and vocabulary. Adverb is the mostcomplicated category in the empty words of ancient Chinese. Research onadverbs of ancient Chinese plays an important role in that on ancientChinese, but the current achievement is not so satisfactory.There are 160 adverbs in the works ZhanGuoCe. They are dividedinto 7 categories according to their meaning and usage: (1) range adverb,(2) negative adverb, (3) extent adverb, (4) time adverb, (5) mood adverb,(6) manner adverb, (7) associating adverb. The grammar features of theadverbs in each category would be concluded, by means of lists, by thesystemic analysis on their places in sentences, their qualification topredicates, their meaning direction. The number of appearance, usage anddevelopment of each adverb in the works will be shown in the end.This article draws a outline of the adverb system in the worksZhanGuoCe by means of plane depiction and lists, which providesmaterials for the research on history of Chinese.
