Climax is an important category that people generalize and analogize from the development of the world and human society. Grammarians have conducted lots of researches in the field of climax categories, classifications, distribution rules and syntactic functions. Some of them conduct polymeric research; some conduct case study; some do research on them in simple sentences; some conduct researches in compound sentences; some make a historical study of some popular additive words. Either in the macro-study field or in the micro-study field, we have gained lots of research achievements. But the former research achievements can rarely be directly used in the natural language understanding and process. Therefore, considering the significance of the researches into the natural language understanding and process, this dissertation has conducted researches into the additive words gathered in Hou Xuechao's Dictionary of Modern Chinese Function words as the research source, and through description and explanation of the additive words as the research approaches. The purpose is to explore the classifications and syntactic functions of the additive words. On the process of analyzing their syntactic characteristics, we arrive at a conclusion of the characteristics of the climax, that's: climax occurs among the sentential elements of a sentence, but it is displayed by the coordinate elements, or the superficially in-coordinate elements. Based on this conclusion, we explore the syntactic characteristics of the additive words. Additionally, on the basis of their syntactic characteristics, we classify the additive words and summarize their syntactic functions in the form of tables, with the hope of pushing forward the development of the natural language understanding and process.
