The development of Chinese education in Australia and New Zealand was closely connected with the history of Chinese immigrants. During the implementing of the "White Australian Policy" and the "white New Zealander Policy", the Chinese immigrants suffered from discrimination and persecution, so the sum of the Chinese immigrants decreased dramatically, and Chinese education was not carried out until in the early 20th century. Furthermore,it developed very slowly.Before the World Warâ…¡,Chinese education in Australia and New Zealand had the following characteristics:Chinese schools being numerically small and of small scale. The Chinese schools being sponsored entirely by the Chinese Australian merchants. Due to lack of teachers and funds, the Chinese schools being run by spells.After the World Warâ…¡, the international situation had undergone great changes, and China improved her international status constantly, so Australia and New Zealand gradually revised the "Restricting Immigrant Act", which triggered off a new wave of Chinese immigrants. Thereby, Chinese education had also flourished, showing some new features: a large number of Chinese schools appearing, the diversification of sponsoring forces, the enrollment scale being expanded, the teachers having relatively stable population, the increasing funds and a variety of courses. However, the problems of lack of teachers, textbooks and funds hadn't been solved completely.Australia and New Zealand were becoming a favorite destination for Chinese immigrants. The Chinese immigrants in the two states had the same experience. The comparative study of Chinese education between Australia and New Zealand would be conducive to the development of Chinese education in the future,and moreover, could draw a moral from it and make Chinese be absorbed into the social mainstream in Australia and New Zealand and promote the sound development of Chinese society and the friendship between China and Australia and New Zealand.Based on the history of the Chinese immigrants in Australia and New Zealand, using historical analysis way and comparative analysis way, the author studied deeply the development of Chinese education in Australia and New Zealand and analyzed its trend.
