The implementation of China's reform and opening-up policy with the resulting development of economic, science and technology considerably increases the soft power of our country in the world, as a result the Chinese is widely applied, and also the international Chinese education is further improved. During one-year assistant teaching practice in New Zealand I found: the quantity of local Chinese learners was increasing, but the teaching method of Chinese remained "traditionally" which was affected by the alphabetic writing teaching ways, the problem that the Chinese characters' teaching was kept on the secondary role was particularly prominent, which manifested as follows: No independent Chinese characters class; No ideal teaching materials available; Chinese characters' teaching was only for recognition and was more served for vocabulary and grammar teaching; The thoughts of " Chinese characters were difficult to recognize, Chinese characters were difficult to study" rooted in local Chinese learners, it resulted in a strong sense of fear. To look deeper, the reasons included that the inherent characteristics of Chinese characters and the close relationship between Chinese characters and the thousands of years' Chinese culture were ignored, and the interference of the thoughts that the ability of communication was more important than writing.Throughout the history of the development in international Chinese education lasting nearly half century, the study of Chinese characters' teaching method is started in the late 1990 s, afterwards the research and theoretical results from all aspects about how to break through the bottleneck of the weak teaching method in the international Chinese characters education and to improve the overall level of international Chinese education begin to emerge endlessly, but the Chinese characters' teaching method which is integrated with practices and suits different Chinese learners owing different language background and different learning phase is still on the gradual development stage. While this article aims to put forward some practical teaching strategies on the Chinese characters teaching on the initial stage in New Zealand by summarizing the existing Chinese characters teaching theories and methods and combining the characteristics of Chinese learners in New Zealand, at the same time I really hope it can break the ice and spur more experts to pay attention and study deeply.In this article, the international Chinese characters teaching methods in recent years Chinese are summarized and studied, and on this basis, the characteristics of Chinese characters' learners on the initial stage in New Zealand and the teaching situation are analyzed. Its innovation lies in that the author actively explores the Chinese characters teaching method suiting local condition, and the research does not limit on the theoretical level, but also demonstrates the feasibility through the specific classroom experiment. So the result has certain practicability and can be referred for subsequent research.
