Shantou, as a new city, appeared after the Second Opium War. Since then, it was compelled to be one of the trading ports and Qing government established Teochew Custom here. Henceforth, Shantou Port had developed well and the quantity of its goods was No.3 in our China. Its location and status of TeoChewese in Southeast Asia made many west countries discovere its potential. West consulates were set up here, then, Christianity followed. The mission church set up hospitals and schools here with the purpose of making all the Chinese Christianization.Mission School was a new thing in the history of education at the modern time of China. It was different form conventional private and official education. Its mode of teaching was multiplex, and its content contained much occidental advanced knowledge. Class an grade system was good for the study of the students of each age group. But it was should be neglected that the education of religion was at the center.This article probes the whole development of the mission school before 1949, including its earlier period and its returning back to the Chinese government as well as its influence with certain famous ones as the model.I try to exhibit and analyze the mission school in Shantou in the modern time from a macro perspective concretely and comprehensively on the basis of previous research, with the intention of providing help for knowing and researching comprehensively on Shantou local history and Shantou church history.
