China is a country of poetry, literature revolution was always led by poetry. During the evolution process of Chinese new poetry in 20th century, Folk Songs, as the vital resource, had an important impact on the construction of new poetry. During the May 4th period, the vigorous Collecting Folk Songs Campaign was started in order to seek resources for new poetry. In the Folk Songs Campaign, Liang Shichiu, Zhu Guangqian, Lin Geng and other researchers on literature discussed on the relationships of folk songs and new poetry. Everyone stuck to his own viewpoint, and discussed on the folk songs'significance to new poetry in theory.Early vernacular poets, LiuDabai, LiuBannong, Yu Pingbo, ShenYinmo, kangBaiqing and so on created the poetry by referencing the folk songs consciously. Liu Dabai and Liu Bannong adopted the style of direct imitation, who imitated the folk songs, and attempted to create a large number of'folk songs'vernacular poetry. Liu Dabai's'folk songs'vernacular poetry mainly described the hard life of the depressed class, and Liu Bannong mainly collect, sort out and created love songs by imitating. YuPingbo, who had profound accomplishment in Chinese classical Poems and Shen Yinmo indirectly learned from folk songs. Yu Pingbo had clear-cut theory, who initiated popularizing poetry, which should learn from folk songs. But Yu Pingbo didn't put his theory into practice fully, whose poetic language was classically elegant, and only the creation of children'songs was comparatively successful. Shen Yinmo assimilated classical poems successfully, and wrote the life of common people in his vernacular poetry, but such kind of poems is very little.When he summed up the Folk Songs Campaign, Hu Shi highly praised the folk songs'value for new poetry in literature and art, and confirmed the Collecting Folk Songs Campaign, and ZhuZiqing negated the folk songs'construction significance to poetry. Early vernacular poets were unfamiliar with the real life of the depressed class shown by folk songs, and they had one-sided knowledge of the folklore form, folk songs. There is incommensurability between the style of folk oral literature that folk songs represented and the style of written literature that new poetry represented. The folk songs couldn't completely shoulder the mission of the times that early vernacular poetry'created the new poems'. Due to the triple reasons: poetry's contents and forms and the times, The May 4th Folk Songs Campaign failed to establish Chinese new poetry. However, Chinese poetry had been taking the folk songs as the important resources since ancient times. The May 4th Folk Songs Campaign connected the tradition of new poetry with classical poems, and opened the folk songs ethos of Chinese new poetry in the 20th century.
