English news translation plays an important role in intercultural communication. Under the historic background of globalization, information flows more quickly and freely in every communication channel than ever before, among which news serving as an important medium provides the latest information and social knowledge to Chinese readers. However, news is an official discourse loaded with source language dominant ideology. News can affect and control people's cognition directly or indirectly and remains a significant factor in the formation of people's ideologies and attitudes. When English news is translated, not only the message but also the different ideas, values and beliefs may be imported, which do not fit in with Chinese underlying ideology and Chinese readers' expectation. Therefore, English news translation is not a simple task. It calls for the translator's high critical awareness and ability to rewrite the source text.In order to resist the western ideology infiltration and western media's discourse hegemony, this thesis adopts a deductive approach to reveal the implied ideology clash in English news and Chinese news and proposes concrete translation strategies to tackle the existing ideology clash when English news is translated into Chinese. Therefore, Chinese readers will not only be well-informed but also avoid being misled by the western media and form a correct attitude toward the international affairs from our own perspective. Based on the linguistic study and skopos guidance in English news translation, this thesis attaches great importance to the translator's decoding and rewriting of the English news under the influence of the dominant ideology. Moreover, translation strategies are illustrated by examples carefully selected from the angle of ideology clash. This thesis presents the ideology influence on news translation, including the position of ideology in translation, the ideological influence on source text selection and translation strategies as well as the translator's role in translation. After that, the ideology clash is revealed through a close comparison between Chinese news and English news in content selection, language, and writing style. The thesis claims that the appropriate approach to do English news translation is rewriting or manipulation by making some adaptations. Translation strategies are further explored with examples to provide some practical specific methods to deal with the ideology clash in English news translation. Re-organization, deletion, addition and substitution are effective methods to rewrite the English news at the levels of lexis, syntax and discourse.
