Ideology In Rewriting Theory Applied To News Translation

Despite the long history of ideological influence on translation, ideological approach to news translation is a relatively new in translation studies. Previous studies of the news translation mainly attach importance to general linguistic features of news reports. This paper does research on the influence of ideology, that is, on the non-linguistic factor in the news translation.Chapter One describes previous study on translation and cites the concept of ideology, besides, the significance and aim of this thesis are also presented. In Chapter Two, Lefevere's theory is applied to talk about his descriptions of translation and the relationship between translation and ideology.Chapter Three argues that ideology exerts significant influence on the operational process of the news translation, and the processes are divided into two aspects, including the stage of decoding and the stage of re-encoding of news translation. In the stage of decoding, the translator's ideology regarding political and cultural ideology, may conflict with the hidden ideology in the source texts, accordingly, the outcome of the translation will be affected. In the stage of re-encoding, the intervention of power relations and readership also influence the translators in the news translation.Chapter Four states that ideology also interferes with the selection of translation strategies, which are mainly reflected by the selection of source news texts and the choice of specific translation strategies. As far as translation strategies of English news are concerned, the author proposes specific methods to deal with variously ideological problems, which include re-organization, deletion, addition and substitution. Based on the study, the author concludes that ideology is an essential factor in news translation and news translators should raise their awareness of the ideological manipulation of news translation and pick up appropriate methods whenever encountered with ideological conflicts which deserve further efforts on this study.
