In the globalization time, news is an indispensable part of people’s daily life. The newstranslation from English into Chinese is a part of international news making and transmission, acting as a window through which Chinese people know the outside world. Scholars haveresearched the topic of news translation from English into Chinese since the late seventies ofthe20thcentury. For example, some scholars have studied it from the perspective ofjournalism; the majority of scholars have studied it from the perspective of translation, mostof them have focused on news translation practice, the research from perspectives oftranslation theories is inadequate and can’t comprehensively and objectively reflect thecomplex factors involved in the process of news translation from English into Chinese. AndreLefevere, an American translation theorist, proposed his Rewriting Theory in1992, whichcan be adopted to better explain the complex factors involved in the process of newstranslation from English into Chinese because this theory expounds the complexity oftranslation by positing translation in a broad social and political context. With the Rewriting Theory as theoretical foundation, this paper studies news translationfrom English into Chinese through the adoption of descriptive research method and literatureresearch method. Firstly, the status quo of news translation at home and abroad is reviewed;secondly, the concept, the development and the constraints of the Rewriting Theory areexplained; thirdly, the position of news translation from English into Chinese in theinternational news making and dissemination is explored to reveal the unequal relationshipbehind news translation from English into Chinese; at last, the relationship between newstranslation from English into Chinese and social, political and cultural factors is researchedthrough study of the functions of three constraints, ideology, poetics and patronage in newstranslation from English into Chinese. The complex factors involved in the news translationcan be reflected comprehensively and objectively by positing it in a social, political andcultural context. The past related researches proving the function(s) of one or manyconstraints of the Rewriting Theory by translation examples can’t comprehensively reflectdifferent factors involved in the news translation from English into Chinese. Regarding this, the news translation from English into Chinese is regarded as one stage in the process ofinternational news making and transmission in this study, the functions of three constraints, ideology, poetics and patronage in the process of news translation is analyzed in detail tohighlight the influence of the unequal relationship between English and Chinese languages, the cultural differences between Western and China on the news translation from English intoChinese. The research reveals that news translation from English into Chinese is not only thetransfer of different languages but also the transfer of different cultures concerned with theinfluence of social, political and cultural factors. The nature of news translation from Englishinto Chinese is an adaptive rewriting.
