Function Plus Loyalty Principle And Its Application In C/E Official Documentation Translations

In 1989, Chnstiane Nord put forward function plus loyalty principle in her book Text Analysis in Translation: Theory, Methodology, and Didactic Application of a Model for Translation-Oriented Text Analysis for the first time, which serves as an important impetus in the development of the Germany-based Funetionalism as well as in the translation studies community. The introduction of loyalty principle into functionalist mode is intended to reduce the radical functionalism in the translation process and to stress the culture-specific concepts of translation in the two cultures, thus providing effective directions for translation practice.Based on the theoretical analysis of function plus loyalty principle, and a special focus on the culture-specific concepts of translation, this paper tries to probe into the handlings of C/E official documentation translations. It is pointed out that the objective of C/E official documentation translations is to ensure the target text receiver's accurate and obstruction-free comprehension of the messages the source text conveys. Due to the special features of Chinese official documentations, especially the cultural and ideological differences between Chinese and English, the traditional fidelity-oriented translation approach should be replaced by a more flexible and reasonable purpose-oriented translation approach. By taking into consideration both the source text author's intention and the target text receiver's expectations, the translator should employ translation strategies such as translation with adaptation, translation with explanation, and translation with ellipsis to negotiate the differences between expressions, logics and cultures encoded respectively in the two languages concerned, so as to realize the communicative purposes of the target text and acceptability of the target text.By elaborating on the formation. development, innovations and implications of function plus loyalty principle, this paper not only affirms the great contribution function plus loyalty principle has made to Functional Translation Studies and translation practice, but also indicates the limitations existing in function plus loyalty principle.Through the integration of theoretical analysis and practical application, this paper demonstrates the advantages of function plus loyalty principle in the hope that it might bring some enlightenment on publicity-oriented, intercultural translation practice.
