The thesis aims at a theoretical review about the theory of sense backed up by empirical proof. The author starts with a review of the existing theoretical contents, further carries out a trial empirical study of the theory and finally draws conclusions based on the empirical findings. Chapter One analyzes pioneering researches on the theory of sense and the lack of effort in this regard rationalizes the author's orientation. Then the original theory is reviewed in both a chronological and geographical manner. In Chapter Two, the establishment and development of the theory are reviewed against the background of interpreting research in the West, leading to an introduction to the status-quo of the theory in China in Chapter Three. In Chapter Four, based on an elaboration on the theoretical core of the theory, i.e. key concepts such as sense and deverbalization and major arguments such as the Triangle Model, the author designs and conducts a trial empirical study of the theory and draws conclusions in Chapter Five. Although the theory of sense is considered somewhat obsolete compared with the Effort Model and other burgeoning theories and models, the author believes that, activated with empirical studies, the theory would be blooming with more theoretical and practical revelations and calls for research effort in this regard.
