| College life is critical to individuals. During this period, social anxiety in social life is apparent among the problems facing with contemporary college students, and self-concept is one of the elements affecting the so-called social anxiety. This article discusses self-concept and social anxiety of college students by considering the existing theories and research and; analyses main features of and relationships between self-concept and social anxiety, with assistance of TSCS (Tennessee Self-concept Scale), IAS (Interaction Anxiousness Scale) and SPSS statistic software. The results of research prove that:1. self-concept of most college students seems to be similar in gender in most dimensions, but there are differences in moral-ethieal self and self-criticism. Obviously, girls behave more actively than boys in the two above-mentioned dimensions.2. the students who major in science, representing more optimistic, have higher self-concept than the students major in arts. Meanwhile, they are considerably different from each other in physical self, self-satisfaction and total positive.3.the self-concept appears significantly diverse among different grades in moral-ethieal self, personal self, family self , social self , self-identity, self-satisfaction,self-behavior, self-criticism and total positive. Compared with the positive self-concept of the seniors, the juniors appeared comparatively passive.4. students who are only child and non-only child demonstrate obviously different in dimensions of self-concept except for social self dimension.5. the difference between the student cadres and the ordinary students in social self is considerable, but trivial in other self-concept dimensions.6. there are great differences in self-concept between students from cities and those from countryside. The students from countryside behave more active in physical self, moral-ethieal self, personal self, family-self, self-identity, self-behavior and total positive. However, students from cities are more positive in self-criticism dimension.7. there is no significant difference between the students with good learning achievement and poor learning achievement in every dimension of self-concept.8. the social anxiety level of college students seems to be more serious than before. Student cadres have less social anxiety than ordinary students, but they appear to be similar in other dimensions.9. self-concept of college students negatively relates to the social anxiety of them in physical self,moral-ethieal-self,personal-self,family-self,social-self,self-identity,self-satisfaction,self-behavior, total positive. This phenomenon indicates that the higher the dimensions are, the lower the level of social anxiety needs to be; the fact that self-criticism positively relates to social anxiety shows that there are more social anxiety accompanying with more self-criticism. In all, the self-concept may predict social anxiety effectively. |
