Lin Yutang is a literary translator and bi-lingual writer. He had made great achievements in rendering a large number of classical Chinese philosophical and literary works into English and opening a window for Westerners to view China in a comparatively objective perspective in the first half decades of the 20th century. In a uniting Chinese and Western cultural overview, Lin Yutang as a translator had effectively pushed forward the transmission of Chinese culture in the Western countries on an equal footing. This thesis is intended to make a case study on Lin Yutang's English translation of The Travels of Mingliaotse. It tries to investigate the personal factors such as his personal favorite, religious belief, translation intention, translation theories and the cultural factors such as the ideology, poetics, patronage, target readers'expectation, and the position of source culture and target culture in the process of translation, so as to disclose the translation behavior. With an analysis of Lin Yutang's translation of The Travels of Mingliaotse from the cultural perspective, it is hoped that this study may be helpful for the further studies on Lin Yutang's translation and even the contemporary Chinese-English translation researches in China.
