New Studies On Biography And Ideology Of Dahui Zonggao

After Buddhism spread to China, it went through more than half a century development and become prosperous and spectacular until the Sui and Tang Dynasties period when it culminated. However, the convulsions in Tang and Five Dynasties made the different Buddhism sects into decadency. As time went to the Song Dynasty, governors took the policies on Buddhism with both protection and limitation. In the situation, different Sects continuously explored the new development approaches, which made Buddhism appearing new prospers totally different from past time. Especially, the Chan sect utilized the social and culture circumstance provide by the rulers as turning chances, and designed new way for redemption against its weakness, which made the Chan sect getting a new life. During the period, there occurred many outstanding Buddhist monks, one of them is Dahui Zonggao.In Chan thoughts, Dahui Zonggao not only advocated the Kanhua principle to save the Chan sect, but also combined the Buddhism with the realistic politics and Confucian traditional moral concepts, which actually made the specific politics notions become one part of his Chan thoughts. Dahui Zonggao played an important role not only in Song Dynasty but also in the Chan sect history, so it is very helpful to understand the development of Song Dynasty and afterward by studying his biography and Chan thoughts.This paper centers on the Buddhist monk Dahui Zonggao, starts from a society political and cultural background he lived and his biography, and then studies his contribution, especially the contents and characteristic of his Chan thoughts. The thesis is divided into six sections as follows:Instruction: in this section, the author reviews the current progress in this research topic and shows the significance to perform the study.Chapter 1: The chapter systematically introduces the historical background Dahui Zonggao lived. It includes the summarization of the political situation and the changes in ideology and culture fields between the Northern Song and Southern Song Dynasty, especially the development of the Song-Jin relationship and its influences on the society, the state Buddhism policies as well as Chan sect current status, implying the effect of contemporary environment on the Zonggao's ideology.Chapter 2: this chapter is focused on Dahui Zonggao's biography and his works. The dramatic life, the learning and teaching Buddhism and his works will be introduced on the time order.Chapter 3: Dahui Zonggao's Chan Thoughts. It mainly consists of the introduction of KanhuaChan, the contradiction between kanhuaChan and MozhaoChan, his guidance of Chan to Scholar-Bureaucrat Sanzan and the proposal of Loyalty heart.Chapter 4: The Influence of Dahui Zonggao's Chan Thoughts.
