In recent years, during the course of teaching practice and study, many scholars have found that students learning Chinese as a second language still have some problems in expression in spite of having taken some relatively systematic and regular courses, such as phonetics, words, grammar, etc. Some of those problems go beyond the scope of syntax and intrude in the scope of text, which is just a task needing people to make a further study. The paper, rooting in the Theory of Text Cohesion, makes a relatively full analysis and summary about the problems existing in the teaching of text.Firstly, the paper defines the concept of text. Tough there are a lot of definitions of text, the author believes that text mainly indicates a coherent linguistic unit expressing complete information and having communicative function. Then this paper analyzes the two main characteristics of text, i.e. cohesion and coherence. Then, the concept of "Theory of Text Cohesion" from Halliday is introduced, as well as the classification of cohesion. In addition, this paper illustrates the tight relation between cohesion and coherence, i.e. coherence is the purpose of cohesion, while cohesion is the main way to achieve coherence. To make that relation clear is the basic premise for this paper to analyze text teaching.Then, the author makes a summary of the application of Theory of Text Cohesion in TCSL. The enlightenment and effect of Theory of Text Cohesion is mentioned. And the author describes some errors in students' text writing, laid emphasis on the phenomenon of "excessive -cohesion". The author classifies "excessive-cohesion" into three kinds, i.e. excessive-cohesion of error, excessive-cohesion of surplus and excessive-cohesion of markedness. And then, the author analyses the reasons causing excessive -cohesion, including negative transfer from mother tongue or the first second-language, transfer form objective language and misleading teaching method. Directed against excessive-cohesion, the author puts forward the idea of "moderate-cohesion", with the relation between cohesion and coherence, relevance theory and Chinese character of Parataxis to support it. And the importance of moderate-cohesion is also mentioned.At last, according to statement above and experience in teaching, the author provides some advice to the TCSL, mainly in the scope of text.
