Cartoon is a miracle in cultural history of 20th century. It has achieved a lot of honors since it came into being. Chinese cartoon was outstanding in 1970's; but it fell behind other countries after 1990's. The market of Chinese cartoon is monopolized by Disney and Japanese cartoon. Under this situation, the research on cartoon is quite important, not only for we can absorb cartoon experiences, either good ones or bad ones, but also for, in deep meaning, we can inherit national culture. The development of national culture, not only absorbs alien culture, mixed together with national culture, but also sifts traditional culture, fitted to age development. Mulan is a successful example, making alien culture national, Nezha Stirring the Sea is a splendid works, making traditional culture modern. Nezha story came from India, gradually mixed together with Chinese culture and became a part of Chinese traditional culture, so that nobody now believes it was alien culture. So, alien culture in the past may become traditional culture at present, and alien culture at present will also become traditional culture in the future. Maybe, hundreds of years later, American will regard Mulan story as American traditional culture. Thus, national culture will be dynamic, absorbing alien culture and sifting traditional culture. This thesis has a detailed analysis and research about Disney cartoon Mulan and Chinese cartoon Nezha Stirring the Sea, from comparing culture. It explores the issue that cartoon adapts folk literature in aspect of absorbing transversely and inheriting vertically. At first, this thesis has a careful inquiring about the significance of Mulan in China and America culture, including traditional culture in Mulan-ci: the loyalty and filial piety; the braveness; the mediocrity, and American value creed in Disney cartoon Mulan: individualistic heroism; women's rights, sums up the causes why cultural differences emerged and how American culture absorbs alien culture. The second, this thesis arranges the development of Nezha story, analyses its culture intention: the contending of Buddhism and Taoism; the creed of individual life. It compares folk story Nezha to Chinese cartoon Nezha Stirring the Sea, in order to see what movie reserves original work; what rejects; what increases; and why these changes take place, exploring the problem of culture inheriting. At last, the thesis comes to a conclusion: how to absorb alien culture and how to inherit traditional culture, in order to support some inspire and experiences for Chinese cartoon.
