Sports, the sign of social civilization, is an indispensable part of our social and cultural life nowadays. Therefore, sports are attracting more and more attention. The sports section often makes up as much as one quarter of some daily newspapers. However, many people are still perplexed by the news report when they finish their reading. Journalistic English for sports has its unique features. Compared with other varieties of English, sports news reporting has not enjoyed its due attention. Works concerning a systematic and comprehensive analysis of its stylistic features is rarely seen in the linguistic circle. The present study is an attempt to analyze the language features of sports news reporting systematically on the basis of the theory of modern stylistics. Sports news from 21st Century are collected as the data base of the research and the analysis is on graphological, lexical, syntactic and semantic levels.The study focuses on five points. The first point is the introduction of the thesis. The second point gives a brief overview to previous researches on journalistic English and sports news. The third point discusses the major levels of stylistic analysis, and makes a concise and perspicuous comparison between linguistics and stylistics. The fourth point locates the core of this study. It describes the research methodology including the data collection, analyzing the selected data of 21st Century. The fifth point is the conclusion of the study which presents the results and limitations and suggestions for further study.The major findings of this thesis also provides a reference to English teaching of reading and writing in school. It is significant to sports news writing as well.
