Sports is a sign of social civilization;people direct more and more attention to it. Therefore the report concerning sports in newspaper also gains an increasing proportion. However, little research has been carried out to analyze its stylistic features. In previous studies, scholars mainly regard the journalistic English as a whole entity;hence some differences appear in their results. In this thesis, it is argued that journalistic English is not onefold, but a composite of various kinds of news, which includes different sub-varieties. Based on the theories of modern stylistics, this study has attempted to limit the scope to the analysis of English sports news report. A corpus (ESNR) of about 102,500 words is built, and the materials are downloaded from the websites of The New York Times and The Washington Post. With the facility of computer software and programs (SPSS and FOXPRO), several other corpora are also employed to better generalize the stylistic features of ESNR, including LOBA, BROWNA, MTE, MEE and NEC, since the distinction of a style cannot be perceived without comparison. In the analysis, many differences are revealed between ESNR and each other corpus on the levels of graphology, lexicon, grammar and semantics. The most significant is that as a sub-variety of LOBA and BROWNA, ESNR presents certain different style, which tends to be less formal and more vivid.
