| Newspaper, as carrier of news, is an important source of how people obtain information. While reading English news, people constantly feel that there exist similarities between newspapers published in English-speaking countries and those in China, but the differences are also to be reckoned. However, researches aiming at comparing English newspapers in China and English-speaking countries are few. Then what are the differences? What causes them? To solve these problems, the present thesis aims to conduct a contrastive study on the stylistic features of sports news of China Daily and New York Times. The research starts with selecting16articles, namely8groups of news covering the same topic respectively. Under the framework of Formal Stylistics, the research works on the stylistic features of the two corpora on four levels, with quantitative and qualitative method, and eventually works out the similarities and differences between the two corpora. From a macro perspective, the texts of the two groups are similar in style, but some differences exist judged from a micro view. The findings of the research have implications for English learners to better grasp the stylistic features of journalistic English, to improve their reading and writing skills, and thus enhance the capability of using the language. Furthermore, the study is valuable in helping news reporters to write news that appeal to more audience, and convey useful information to the world effectively. Last but not least, hopefully, the results of this study may enrich and expand the scope of application of the theories, and be helpful in designing courses of English for specific purpose. For further research, the author recommends more scaled and profound study on the cultural aspects across nations. |
