Coincide conclusion about the future of free verse from 1919 to 1949 has not been reached by important theorists of new-poem, to which the answer responds depending upon the maturity of the free verse from the practical perspective. Free verse's maturing needs the supporting of both a large number of poetry texts and rich theoretical resources. The purpose of this study is to sort out relevant theories in order to accelerate free verse maturity and make some theoretical contribution for the development of free verse.This paper intends to explore the construction of the Chinese modern free verse by tracing its origin macro-levelly and historical vivification micro-levelly. Methodology of tracing its origin pays attention to the correlations between the old and new things which could master the historical correlations between the preceding part and things. If this methodology is put into the theoretical research of free verse, it can be classified into two groups: institutional tracing and style tracing. The former is to explore the primitive meaning of the free verse so as to discern and define its status in quo while the latter attempts to make clear the difference of the artistic style of the free verse in its development course and find its development trends in terms of its vicissitude. In addition, methodology of historical vivification could restitute the original visage of the free verse theory. Only the literature vivification is done under the direction of the historical vivification, academic originality will be facilitated in the theoretical discussions of free verse. Following gist should be included in the historical vivification at least: idea representation of free verse theorists and verification of related materials; collecting and reading of the theoretical texts of free verse and corresponding investigation outside of the texts.This paper makes an investigation on free verse poetic theories of six poets such as Guo Moruo, Mu Mutian, Dai Wangshu, Lin Geng, Fei Ming and Ai Qing. All of these predecessors of free verse have provided rewarding references for today's free verse construction with their abundant viewpoints on free versetheory.Free verse references: First is the external musicality of the "free verse" form. Second is the conciseness and compactness of the free verse in length which the correlate to the acceptance expectancy and reading habit of the people at their time. Third is the rich and diversified performances of free verse. Free verse should be in pursuit of the various free performance, that is rich and diversified performances at the poetics norms such as the lining, rhyme and so on.
