Research On Wood Carving Decoration Of Traditional Residential Buildings In Jiaodong

Wood carving decoration of traditional residential buildings in Jiaodong is the product of unique geographical environment and cultural atmosphere of Jiaodong.They could fully reflect the architectural style and characteristics of Jiaodong area,which have high cultural and artistic value.In 2009 "Sculpture Skills of Residential Buildings in Huangxian" was listed as a traditional skill in the Second Batch of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Shandong Province.Traditional wood carving attracts people's attention once again as an intangible cultural heritage.Until now there is no special research on wood carving decoration of traditional residential buildings in Jiaodong.Most of the existing research only focuses on the types of integral architectural decoration or decorative patterns.There are no comprehensive regional survey and systematic research.There are no comprehensive research results on wood carving decoration of traditional residential buildings in the whole Jiaodong area.This thesis provides systematic and comprehensive research and review on wood carving decoration of traditional residential buildings in Jiaodong.There are three main parts in this thesis.Firstly,the research on spatial distribution of wood carving in residential buildings is done.The wood carvings are classified based on the distributions at different locations.From that the styles and decorations of different types of wood carvings are described in detail.Secondly,the decoration subject,cultural connotation and artistic style are investigated.By analyzing the wood carving theme decoration,the auspicious implication and cultural connotation in it are summarized as well as the style of art to some extent.Thirdly,the technologies of traditional wood carving are summarized and arranged,as well as the current protection and inheritance.The manufacture of traditional woodcarving is introduced form the material tools,technologies and processes.The preservation status of traditional woodcarving and the development status of wood carving techniques are researched.Further the corresponding suggestions on protection,inheritance and development are provided based on the research.The method of field investigation is used in the research.Comprehensive and systematic investigations are done on wood carving decorations of traditional residential buildings in many villages in Jiaodong area,mainly including Yantai,Weihai and Qingdao.Many interviews for Zhang Yejian are conducted,who is the successor of Huangxian woodcarving skills.A large amount of authentic and reliable first-hand materials is obtained,which provides powerful support for this research.Meanwhile.many modern scientific technologies are incorporated in the process of on-the-spot investigations.For some particularly beautiful and distinctive wood carving decorations.three-dimensional laser scanner is used to collect the dimensional style and pattern color information.In this way the appearance styles of wood carving decoration of traditional residential buildings in Jiaodong area could be better reflected as well as better research results.
