| After World War II, the international politics and world strategic pattern were changed completely. Europe, which was used to be the center of international system, collapsed thoroughly. Instead, a new pattern of the confrontation of the two powers US and USSR was emerged. As the main allies against Fascist during World War II, Both of Britain and America practiced military occupation in Germany and Japan during the post-war years. However, compared to Germany which was disassembled and occupied of its districts by the allied forces, Japan was absolutely occupied and controlled by America alone. Due to the post-war economic depression, Britain was unable to challenge the leading position in the international system which was occupied by America. But, this didn't mean that Britain had little self-interest consideration over Japan issue. Britain still had her own special post-war policy towards Japan.During the whole occupation period, British and American policies towards Japan were constantly adjusted owing to the development of international situation. For example, American government transformed its policy towards Japan from pressing to supporting and fostering. And Britain changed its attitude on Japan from proposing demilitarization to allowing Japan limited defense, from encouraging Japanese economic recovery to restricting Japanese economy as well. No matter how the both sides' policies to Japan were adjusted, the controversy and consent between Britain and US existed throughout the total occupation period. This paper consists of three parts. The first part mainly discuss the divergence and arbitration of policy to Janpan between Britain and America during early days of occupation(the years between 1945 and 1947). It includes tentative policy of Britain and America to Japan in the period of the war, and the rule and policy of Britain and America to Japan after the war. There was much divergence between the two states, such as the power of dominance, economic policy to Japan, the problem of compensation, and peace treaty to Japan. The second part discourses upon change of situation and adjustment of policy to Japan between Britain and America during the period of 1947 and 1951. After Cold War, America change the exportation of Japan to Southeast Asia, but Britain opposed because it thought about its own interests. To the problem of safety to Japan, Britain claimed that it supported US-Japan Security Pact. The third part discuss Common Project of Britain and America about the problem of making peace to Japan. |
