| Folk New Year Xylograph originated from the ancient custom that people often stuck pictures of guardian angle on the doors on the day of Chinese New Year. With the prevalence and rapid development of printing technology by using woodblock in Tang Dynasty, xylograph reached its glorious age in Ming and Qing Dynasty. Its subjects are mostly concerned with people's custom and life style. Since recently much more attention is paid to the folk art and many studies on it are carried out, all kinds of design elements have been applied to the various art creations. As an artistic designer, the author is very interested in learning and study of art and chooses the New Year Xylograph of Zhuxian Town as his topic to explore. This thesis explores the art in terms of its style and design element, by means of combination of documentary record with visual materials. And methods, such as narration, citation, contrast, and analysis etc, are also applied in this thesis. The thesis consists of seven parts:Part One gives the brief introduction of its history and background, as well as its design idea; Part Two focuses on the color design feature which is integral part of this art, and explores the root of its color; Part Three mainly discusses the modern design idea which implied in the various forms of the art, in terms of making methodology; Part Four elaborates the characteristics of this art, and explains the resemblance of its skills and modern design by using many examples; Part Five analyzes the art in very minor aspect; Part Six appreciates the new year xylograph in modern design. And the last part is the conclusion:1,The choosing of color is based on the color perception and sensory perception instinct of ancient people.2,The molding making of Zhuxian town new year xylograph expresses the construction molding making characteristic which is derived from the conception of traditional culture.3,The layout of the art is featured as being of compatibility with the modern design.4,The elements provide the design resources and method for the modern design.5,Zhuxian town new year xylograph is not only an ancient folk art, but also a modern design art. |
