Shuowen-Tongxun-Dingsheng is the masterpiece of Zhu Junsheng, one of the Four famous specialists on Shuowen-Jiezi in the Qing Dynasty. The obvious characteristic of this book is that it broke the system of arranging characters according to the form in Shuowen-Jiezi. This book used the phonetic symbols, instead of the semantic symbols, to arrange more than 10,000 characters in accordance with 1145 phonetic symbols all over the book, and then in accordance with 18 Guyun. The thesis deals with researches on the phonetic symbols in Shuowen-Tongxun-Dingsheng. Firstly, we do an objective analysis on the phonetic symbols , showing the sound system at the basic outlook. On this basis, depending on the language materials that Zhu Junsheng cited and analysed, we analyse the phonetic symbol's phonetic-indicating function and source-indicating function noted by Zhu. We draw a conclusion that this book is very important in research of Chinese Phonolgy and Chinese Etymology. The main part of this thesis is the second chapter to the fifth chapter, with a focus on Chapter four. We sort out 157 sets of paronym noted by Zhu and has been confirmed by modern linguists. We also verify 19 sets of paronym noted by Zhu. Then we do some research on the phonetic symbol's source-indicating function and we sum up Zhu Junsheng' contribution to the research of Chinese Etymology.
