How a phrase forms sentences is a subject that Chinese grammarians paid attention decades years ago. However, the study in this field is still not comprehensive, staying at the primary stage. This thesis selects one type of phrase: subject—predicate phrase to analyze its capability of forming declarative sentences and the requirement to realize it. Thus, it proves that the capability of subject—predicate phrase to form sentences is closely related with its free form or bound form, and further phrase and sentence will be differentiated. This thesis consists of five parts:Part 1 is the introduction briefly introducing the main purpose and significance of this paper, the present studies of subject—predicate phrase and the methods of the research.Part 2 concerns with why some subject—predicate phrases are fully capable of forming sentences. And what are the conditions to realize it, our research focuses on sentences with verb, adjective and noun as predicates respectively.Part 3 deals with why some other subject—predicate phrases are not capable of forming sentences, with six typical illustrations, analyzed from three point of views: syntax, semantics and pragmatics.Part 4 is the valence and cognitive explanation of the necessary sentence completing elements, and explores its relationship with verb valence, adjective valence and noun valence.Part 5 is the conclusion, and puts forward some issues worth further research.
