Although it has been 90 years since Mr. Liu Bannong published his"Practical Writing Teaching"in"New Youth", his thought on practical writing teaching sheds some light on today's Chinese language teaching reform.Based on literature analysis, investigation and research, the paper mainly studies the historical background of how Liu Bannong's thought on practical writing teaching was formed, its major thoughts & reform practice, its limitations and enlightenment on present Chinese language teaching.By analyzing the historical background, we can draw the conclusion that the formation of Liu's thought was a comprehensive product of his life experience, prevailing pragmatism of his time, abolishment of imperial examination system, western thoughts and new cultural trend of thought.Liu's thought and its reform practice is embodied in his distinguishing literary writing from practical writing by emphasizing the practicability and popularity of the latter, putting forward the"seeking truth from the facts"teaching aim, establishing 12 criteria as a standard for material selection of Chinese textbooks, bringing forward 10 requirements for instructional reading teaching, which are different from that of old Chinese teaching method, focusing on cultivating students'self-regulated learning & innovation spirit, emphasizing writing teaching, pointing out the precautions and summarizing the typical mistakes in writing, attaching great importance to practical proposition and advocating"grade twice & discuss once"correcting method.Liu's thought has its limitations in both selection standard and instructional reading teaching and has caused a lot of disputes; however, it has important impacts on Chinese language teaching at that time and at present.By using Liu Bannong's thought on practical writing teaching for reference, the paper analyzes current teaching and reform practice and concludes that importance should be attached to the practicability in writing, strengthens that the disciplinary orientation and textbook compilation in Chinese language educational reform should be in accordance with students'actual conditions, advocates that Chinese reading teaching should be freed from the trivial analyses of words, phrases, sentences, paragraphs'main ideas, passages'central ideas and writing backgrounds, emphasizes that students'self-regulated and research-oriented learning ability should be developed in instructional reading teaching, and puts forward that more variety of writing practice, enriched topics and practicality should be encouraged in Chinese writing teaching.
