With the development of the society, practical writing which is an essential communication tool in our daily life and work draws more and more attentions from people. And it is an inevitable demand of the times to open the applied writing course in college.However, the ability of students’practical writing doesn’t meet the requirements. Mistakes are quite common in their writings. For example, the title of the article is wrong the basic point of view is not scientific; the purpose of the article is not clear; the material is not reasonable; there are many syntactical errors in the article and the format is not standard.Combining my teaching experience in Wuhan Institute of Physical Education, I did a survey of my students whose majors are not Chinese to investigate this phenomenon further. The results show that the reasons for the students’low level in practical writing are various. From external factors, the status of the practical writing has been marginalized and it has not been placed in a really important position in colleges. Moreover, teachers’ teaching methods are always boring and single. Furthermore, students’ basic writing capacity is weak. From the style of application article itself, the reasons include the formats’ being too various to be understood, the lack of writing materials and the difficulties in choosing the proper words to express students’meanings.Through analyzing those factors, the author put forward some corresponding solutions. From the perspective of teaching strategies, the teaching method should be improved to improve the students’ interests in learning and to cultivate their thinking of writing. From the perspective of students’ learning strategies, the students should correct their study attitudes and cultivate good study strategies first. Then, they need to take positive actions to collect writing materials through various channels. Lastly, a great deal of practice should be done such as modifying the wrong format according to the model, strengthening language training and strengthening writing training, etc.
