Between 1996 and 2007,new requirements for education were created as a consequence of market-orientated economic pressures.The fast-paced introduction of computer technology,along with the rapid development of the Internet,brought technological reform to the field of design and design education.The traditional mode of arts and crafts education in China could not meet these new standards.Meanwhile,international modern design education embraced this period of unprecedented global technological innovation.Because of this,a serious appeal for reform in Chinese design education emerged, and the China Academy of Art faced an historical challenge.In consideration of the pressures of the market economy on modern graphic design education,the design education department of the China Academy of Art began to cultivate experts to meet these new demands by creating more narrowly-focussed, independent departments.One of the most significant changes to take place was that of the Zhuanghuang (most closely translated as 'decoration')subject.After restructuring,the Zhuanghuang subject was renamed to Visual Communication Design Department. Since then,the new graphic design department has developed three major directions for BA and MA degrees.These include graphic design,multimedia and webpage design,and book design.Over the past eleven years,the Visual Communication Design Department of the China Academy of Art has built a relatively complete teaching system and gained sufficient teaching experience.The teaching quality in higher education is the concern of the whole society in terms of the expansion of college enrolment, which is an ever-continuing theme in the development of higher education. The Visual Communication Design Department of China Academy of Art has managed to maintain high quality education under the pressure of an expanding enrolment policy by developing new major directions for more students, optimizing the teaching staff and strengthening MA degree education.By focusing on the four aspects of subject building,course reform,teachers and students and teaching methods,this dissertation is a research report on the history of the graphic design education of Visual Communication Design Department of China Academy of Art between 1996 and 2007.This dissertation aims to probe into the substance and law of graphic design education in the China Academy of Art by analyzing the change from 'arts and crafts' education mode to 'modern graphic design' education mode.
