Asthetic Manipulation Of Language Fuzziness In C-E Translation

Translation is considered a cause full of regrets. Since there are dramatic differences in different languages, cultures, histories and aesthetic conceptions, the translator, sometimes, can merely appreciate the original beauty in the source text. Therefore, it is really difficult to transfer completely the beauty of the source text into the target language and such translation regret will protrude more in referring to the transference of language fuzziness because fuzziness is one of the intrinsic and important characteristics of the natural language.As one of the important features of language, the aesthetic status of fuzziness varies from language to language. And the aesthetic differences challenge the translators when they manipulating the translation of language fuzziness. Scholars at home and abroad have done quite effective work on the research of language fuzziness and its corresponding translation. They have mainly studied from perspectives of reception aesthetics, Gestalt psychology and semiotics aesthetics in accordance with the three unique characteristics of languagefuzziness--indeterminacy, holisticity and inter-penetration. On thefoundation of the research of domestic and overseas scholars, this thesis endeavors to study on manipulation of language fuzziness from theory of intersubjectivity, which has been adopted in handling translation in general, but seldom used in manipulation of translation of language fuzziness yet.In this thesis, the author first delimitates the definition, causes and regular patterns of language fuzziness. Then the author introduces the aesthetic effects of language fuzziness and analyzes characteristics and causes of beauty of language fuzziness from multiple perspectives. Then the author probes into the manipulation of translation of language fuzziness from perspective of intersubjectivity. The theory of intersubjuctivity mainly emphasizes the influence on translation made by the relationship between different translating subjects. Through the analysis and study of the manipulation of translation of language fuzziness from theory of intersubjectivity, the thesis reaches an immature conclusion that through the mutual communication among the translating subjects, some of the beauty of the language fuzziness can be retained to some extent.Henceforth, the author exemplifies some regular patterns of language fuzziness in Bian Cheng and analyzes their contribution of increasing the beauty of holisticity, artistic conception and vividness to Bian Cheng. Then the author makes a macro comparison between two English versions of Bian Cheng from intersubjective perspective on the retainment and ablation of beauty of language fuzziness in translation.Through the research, the author obtained some enlightenment on the translation of language fuzziness from Chinese to English: When people trace back the reasons of ablation of beauty of language fuzziness based on languages differences, they lay particular stress on the linguistic allusions and cultural hedges, but overlook the intrinsicfactor--the difference of national psychological prototypes.Consequently, just because of the aesthetic differences between Chinese and English and the differences of national psychological prototypes between Chinese people and English people, there inevitably arises the ablation of the beauty of language fuzziness in the process of translation.
