This thesis deals with the translation of attitudinal meanings from the perspective of functional theories of translation. Different from previous research, the thesis endeavors to emphasize the directive significances and applicability of functional theories of translation, in the new study field of the translation of attitudinal meanings, in the hope to further the combination of translation theory and practice and help to fill the gap between them. Altogether the thesis consists of six parts. The introduction part starts with a brief literature review, research significances, research objectives, research scope and data sources. In the second part, the theoretical framework on which this thesis is based, and also the functionalist representatives and their theoretical contributions are summarized, to illustrate the advantages in using functional theories of translation in the translation practice of attitudinal meanings. The emphasis of the third part is put on the generalization of appraisal system, especially attitude system and its sub-systems. A proposal is put forward to be testified that functional theories of translation is directive and applicable to the translation of attitudinal meanings, and functional theories of translation suits the translation practice of attitudinal meanings well. Then in the fourth part a detailed functional analysis of the translation of attitudinal meanings is provided from three sub-systems of attitude. In what follows, a comparison of the similarities and dissimilarities of attitudinal meanings in source texts and target texts is given elaborated with figures and tables to demonstrate the proposal. An additional discussion of the causes for the similarities and dissimilarities of attitudinal meanings between source texts and target texts is also provided. Some useful implications obtained from the statistics and analysis include that the basic attitudes in source texts and target texts are similar, while the way to express the attitudes and the intensity of the attitudes expressed in source texts and target texts are of some differences. As analyzed above, the adjustments in target texts are in accordance with the principles of functional theories of translation. Based on these findings, the thesis comes to the conclusion in the last part that functional theories of translation is directive and applicable in the study of the translation of attitudinal meanings, and the two suit each other in nature. Functional theories of translation are directive and applicable in the further study of the relevant sphere of the translation studies of appraisal system.
