Study On Military Markets In Warring States And Qin-Han Period

Military markets which always located near to the barracks were special markets; they were set up in order to meet the army's lift needs. Military markets appeared in the Warring states period and flourished in Qin and Han dynasty. Its development process had its own specific reasons, different period had different one .In the Warring States period, as the extending of war scales, the changing of recruiting system and the setting of passes and Great Wall, military numbers increased and the insufficiency of the army's logistics guarantee appeared, superadded the upgrowth of traffics and development of commercial, military markets which in order to satisfy the soldiers life needs appeared near the barracks. In Qin-Han period, garrison policies were pushed, and the state had to burden the soldier's creature comforts and their weapons caused the military affairs'spending became so large that the state's providing was insufficient some times, military markets flourished and developed continually. As military markets belonged to the scope of market, soldiers and common people could trade freely and the merchandize types were abundant. living goods, production tool and so on were on sale .Except pay in cashes, book account was also included in the trade forms. but both side of the trade need to make a contract which has force of law and promise the repayment time when which is overdue, they can appealed to the official s who see after that. Officials'corrupting which reflected from the bamboo slips of the case of"Hou (an official title) Li Jun in debt to Kou En in the third year of Jian Wu"showed that there were many leaks in the management of military markets. In addition to the management of leveling the prices and handling disputes, the officials'management also need strictly deals to keep the army order and civil-military relations.Combined literature materials with bamboo slips of Qin and Han dynasty, this paper analyzed military markets'producing, development processes, management and effect comprehensively in the period of Warring states to Qin and Han dynasty, based on that, there is a emphasized particularity study on the developmental causes in various stages. After cleared military markets'development process, this paper discussed its development and effect ,from which we can see that the setting of military markets helped to make up the insufficiency of the army's logistics guarantee.
