As a politician whose political career covered the four important historical stages including Late Qing Dynasty, Beijing Government of the Republic of China, Nanjing Government of the Republic of China and People's Republic of China, Yan Huiqing have an important impact on China's Modern History.Yan Huiqing was born in a Christian Family and received both the traditional Chinese education and Western education from his childhood. This combination of Chinese and western education and the combination of education on the past and modern history not only enabled him to enter the diplomatic circles successfully and achieved great accomplishments, but only guaranteed that he kept his personal integrity and put the interests of the Motherland in the highest position in the complexity of politics.As a well-known diplomat, Yan Huiqing acted several times as the diplomatic chief in the era of the Beijing Government of the Republic of China, during which he served as Ambassador to Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and the Chief Representative residing in Russia who attended the League of Unions' Conference. He took part in a series of important diplomatic affairs, such as the Negotiation on Outer Mongolia Issue, Negotiation on Prohibition of Opium-smoking, Paris Peace Conference, Return of the Boxer Indemnity, Washington Conference, Negotiation on Establishing Diplomatic Relations with Soviet Union. In the diplomatic negotiations, Yan Huiqing contributed a great deal in retrieving China's rights, and he played a vital role in China's diplomatic affairs in Modern History.Through years of accumulation in political experience, Yan Huiqing gradually formed his own diplomatic ideology, that is, following the diplomatic policy of upholding the supremacy of national sovereignty, being independent and united under the guidance of a pragmatic diplomatic thinking. The formation of this diplomatic ideology had everything to do with Yan Huiqing's knowledge about modern China's national conditions and his education experience.Yan Huiqing had, for three times, formed the Cabinet and acted as the Prime Minister of the Beijing Government of the Republic of China. Though his cabinets dissolved soon after their formation and his political ambitions hadn't been brought into full play, they surely showed that Yan Huiqing possessed an outstanding position in China's modern political circles.After retirement, though Yan Huiqing's diplomatic career ended, he didn't put the interests of the Nation out of his mind. Faced with the increasingly urgent political situation, Yan Huiqing, who was over sixty years old, took painstaking efforts running and appealing in order to save the nation regardless of his own hardships. After the victory of Anti-Japanese War, Yan Huiqing endeavored to call for the realization of the peace negotiations between Kuomintang and the Communist party despite of the fact that he was 70 years old.As a highly-educated intellectual, Yan Huiqing attached great importance to the development of education. He concerned about the civilians' education problem, and actively participated in the foundings of Tsinghua University, Nankai University, the National Library in Beiping and a series of education-related activities. During his service as the Prime Minister in his cabinet, he made use of the balance of the Boxer Indemnity from the United States of America to found the board of China Education and Culture Fund, Which contributed much to the development of modern culture and education.Whether in the history of China's modern diplomacy, the political history, or the history of education, Yan Huiqing had made an indelible contribution.
