It has been several years that, along with the deeper development of the relationship between China and Vietnam and the cultural and commercial exchange between two countries, there have been more and more mixed marriages between a Chinese and a Vietnamese. In reality, when translating people names from Vietnamese into Chinese, we have had quite many deficiencies, because we do the translation either so freely and not scientifically or taking a word in Chinese language, that does not have any relationship in meaning or sound for a Vietnamese name. Sometimes we even forget completely the original word. Therefore, the translation of names from Vietnamese language into Chinese language is a good subject to discuss and a big problem to solve in the study of translation from Vietnamese into Chinese and reversely. This job is helpful not only for the development of the reasoning of language translation but also for the promotion of the cultural and economical exchange between the two countries.This essay mentions several domains such as linguistics, translation, people names and human culture, applying the method of researching to examine this subject. First, we discuss basic matters such as the function, the attribute and the structure of a name. Secondly, we discuss the meaning, the origin and the characteristics of the Vietnamese and Chinese last and first names. In the major part of the essay, the issue of"the ability of translating"of Vietnamese and Chinese first and last names is carefully examined and largely discussed.First of all, we discuss the relationship between the formation units of the vocabulary system and the formation elements of the Vietnamese and Chinese names, discuss their meaning, and also analyze more deeply the structure of Vietnamese first and last Vietnamese names and the Vietnamese word particles having Chinese influence. Next, we compare the cultural differences and similarities of Vietnamese and Chinese peoples in naming children, based on the domain of human culture and on the three matters: the customs in naming people, the method of naming and the taboos in naming children.Moreover, we explain the application of the linguistics and different methods of translating in order to translate correctly and scientifically a Vietnamese name into Chinese language. We study the application of the reasoning, the reasoning of translation according to the linguistic formation, the reasoning of translating according to the linguistics in the process of translating people names from Vietnamese into Chinese. Finally, the essay summarizes the three common methods in translating Vietnamese names into Chinese: the one word for one word method of translation based on the meaning and the sound in Chinese-Vietnamese word, the corresponding method and the replacement method in order to replace reasonably a name by another. In the mean time, we also call attention to translators in applying these three methods.All the methods of translation discovered from the results of these studies will help us improve scientifically our way of translating and also provide the translators with helpful information in their job of translating people names from Vietnamese language into Chinese language.This essay consists of five parts:0/ Introduction: This part is mainly to indicate clearly the domain and the object of the study, introduce the reasons for choosing the subject, clarify our purpose of our study and at the same time cite the methods and the sources of documents in studying.1/ A number of common matters of Vietnamese and Chinese names. In this part, we discuss the similarities and differences between names in Chinese and Vietnamese through the analyze of the origin and development of people names, their function and attribute, the taboos in naming children, the method of naming and the structure of people names.2/ The meaning, the origin and the characteristics of the Chinese and Vietnamese last and first names. In this part, we study the like and the unlike points between Chinese and Vietnamese names. It includes the forms, the process of development and characteristics of Chinese and Vietnamese names, the like and the unlike points in naming children between Chinese and Vietnamese peoples. We can see that the majority of Vietnamese last names have Chinese origin and the formation elements of the middle name and the first name are of a Chinese-Vietnamese mixture.3/ The ability of translating Chinese names into Vietnamese or Vietnamese names into Chinese. In this part, we notice the vast influence of both languages and cultures in their people names and a number of common problems in language translation.4/ Conclusion and Comments. This part summarizes the main points of the whole essay.We hope that the summary of all these methods of translation will be a good source of researches when translating names and it will improve the scientific and artistic characteristics in translation. The application of these methods will help us not only remember more easily the names of people in our communication, create a familiar impression to Vietnamese people when hearing a translated name that has Vietnamese cultural characteristics, but also encourages the economic exchange between two peoples and contribute a good part to the development of the reasoning of translation of the two languages Chinese-Vietnamese.
