| Wu Qiyao is a watercolor painter, technologist and educationist with great influences in FuJian contemporary history of fine arts. He had a wide circle of acquaintances, such as the great artist Xu Beihong, Jiang Zhaohe, Chen Baoyi, Chen Zhifo and the famous FuJian artist Chen Zifen, Xie Touba and Li Zhiqing. His watercolor paintings extracted the excellence of both western and Chinese paintings and formed an unique style with strong national characters and the spirit of the time. His painting works was a typical representation of Chinese national style with great influences in FuJian and had ever won the prizes for many times in national painting exhibitions. Many current famous artists had ever got enlightenments and instructions from him. He had ever studied art of design in Japan. He created the technology of dyeing design and innovated the floating designs which produced a favorable artistic effect on the umbrellas and lacquerworks of FuZhou. His writings "an introduction to dyeing design " and "a study on floating design" were finished in the 1940's and appraised by the great technologist Chen Zhifo. Nowadays , the viewpoints in the writings were still in the forward position of the academic research and had a directive function on our current research. Several decades years ago, when most of people were not aware of the significance of protecting traditional culture, Wu Qiyao had spent much time on the research of folk art in FuJian, such as wood engraving picture and bodiless lacquer. Moreover , he initiated and inaugurated the research of the FuDing engraving picture in the moon cake. Due to the cultural revolution, his composition "FuJian wood engraving picture" had not been published at the time, but until now, no one could exceed his analysis to it. The first-hand information he collected in those days was more valuable with the losing of the wood engraving pictures and the successors' passing away. in a certain extent, Wu Qiyao made a great contribution to the protection and the development of FuJian folk art. Furthermore, he applied himself to the education of FuJian fine arts and brought up many talents for the development of the local fine arts in FuJian. Therefore, Wu Qiyao should have an important position in FuJian contemporary history of fine arts.Nowadays, the researches on FuJian fine arts mainly focus on the theories of Chinese painting and the history of FuJian fine arts. Some studies on FuJian artists are mainly limited to those ancient ones. However, it's really a pity for the research of FuJian contemporary fine arts that no studies on the artists like Wu Qiyao, an excellent artist with great contributions to the development of FuJian local fine arts, especially the protection and research to FuJian folk art. Therefore, the author chose Wu Qiyao as the object of study. After consulting Wu Qiyao's relevant information, manuscripts, correspondences and diaries and gathering materials from his daughters and students, the author studied Wu Qiyao from his life story, circle of acquaintances, art features and the contributions to the developments of FuJian local fine arts in order to offer an overall and objective analysis of Wu Qiyao, and hoped to offer some relevant information to the studies on FuJian artists and a positive function to the constructions of FuJian regional culture.
