On The Modern Transformation Of TCTT In The Background Of Contemporary Translation Studies

Translation, as an activity in human history, has been discussing extensively. In general, since mankind started translation activities, the study of translation has never ceased. On the contrary, it has undergone a further development with every arrival of translation activity climax in history. Besides, discussions about translation have become so frequent and hot that various translation theories have been formed gradually due to the diversity in the languages, cultures, etc. of different nations, such as the traditional Chinese translation theory (TCTT), the linguistic school, the cultural school and the post-colonial school of Western translation theory.The thesis firstly gives a brief introduction to translation theory. Then it points out the tendency of underestimating theory as well as analyzes the causes of this tendency in the domestic translation field. Since the 1980s, hot arguments on whether there is translatology or not arose. This thesis tries to prove that translatology is already an independent discipline through consulting Kuhn's notion of scientific development. And encouraged by the current achievements in translation studies home and abroad the author is determined to carry out a further study on TCTT with contrastive analyses, including the definition, the historical periods and the characteristics of TCTT. Nowadays, some translators together with some translation theorists have started to realize that TCTT must involve itself in the current movement of modern transformation actively in order to play an important role in the global translation studies. That's to say, the value of our traditional Chinese translation theories should be estimated anew. Furthermore, the key problems of reflecting on TCTT should rest on what to be transformed and how to transform them. Through consulting the current researches in the modern transformation of TCTT the thesis puts forward two concepts of transformation (visible transformation and invisible transformation) to distinguish transformation at different stages. Meanwhile, several strategies of transformation are also suggested in the thesis. Finally, the author hopes this little thesis could make some contribution to the contemporary translation studies.
