In 1983, Howard Gardner, a famous psychologist at Harvard Graduate School of Education, introduced the theory of multiple intelligences with eight aspects. It greatly influences the education of many countries in the world. Gardner's theory is applicable to English language teaching. It helps us to understand the diversity of our students and provides a framework for addressing these differences in our teaching. The thesis, which is partly based on the review of literature of the second language acquisition research, systematically illustrates the application of MI to English teaching in primary schools, and tries to set up new teaching models under the guidance of the MI Theory. The thesis is made up of four parts. Chapter one introduces the significance, methods and contents of the research. It also discusses a variety of English teaching models popular at home and abroad. Chapter two mainly presents the theoretical background of the research. The significance of the application of the MI Theory to primary school English teaching is also discussed. In Chapter three, the author makes a detailed study of how MI Theory can be applied to English teaching in primary schools. The main idea is helping students develop their multiple intelligences, such as spatial intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, musical intelligence and interpersonal intelligence, and promote their linguistic intelligence accordingly. In the concluding chapter, the author presents the data collected to study the influence of MI Theory application on both students and teachers and tries to set up a multiple assessment model based on MI Theory. Suggestions on further research are also included.
