Fujian Nanyin erxian is the only string instrument among Fujian Nanyin Shangsiguan. Its shape and structure are identical with those of Xiqin in Tang and Song Dynasty except its additional qianjin and bow hair of horse tail. For instance, they both have their thin end of axis inserted into the neck from the right side, and the strings tied on the thick end on the right. Fujian Nanyin erxian still retains the ancient features and unique performing techniques, which enriches its value of research. While Chinese Erhu, which belongs to traditional Chinese musical instruments in the Huqin family as well as Nanyin erxian, has so many similarities with Erxian in structures and principles of articulation. This paper discusses a comparative study on Chinese Erhu and Fujian Nanyin erxian from historical origins, characteristics of shapes, performing techniques, artistic expressiveness, music features,in performance, notation, roles in the band and other various aspects. This paper collects the relevant literature and music score through literature method. And by means of historical retrieval, it clarifies the origins and the historical development of Fujian Nanyin erxian and Chinese erhu, outlines their national heritage track.
