This thesis attempts to study the reception of Xu Yuanchong's translation of Chinese classical poetry from native English speakers from the perspective of skopos.By analyzing Xu' skopos in his translation and the response of the reader's reception of "Song of a Pipa Player" from the perspective of diction,it brings to light the realization of Xu's skopos and the optimal of the reader.Xu Yuanchong,a productive and controversial translator in China, has translated Chinese classical poetry mostly into rhymed verse to achieve "beauty in sound"."Song of a Pipa Player" is one of them.In the framework of Hans J. Vermeer's concept of skopos, the thesis studies Xu's skopos of translation in three senses, examines and analyzes the reception of the poem from the perspective of diction from the native English speakers in terms of its readability, poeticness, the interference of the diction and the rhymed scheme, and reaches the conclusion that Xu's skopos has not yet been fully realized, although it is generally accepted,as the "optimal"- ideal translation of "pipa xing"- of in the eyes of the reader should be a rhymed verse with a natural flow and clarity of the English language.
