Over the last decade, higher vocational education in China has rapidly developed. The proportion of higher vocational education students (HVE students) to undergraduates is increasing. But the Public don't accept the higher vocational education and have a prejudice against it now. Most HVE students choose vocational education because of their far low scores. But the students who enter into higher vocational school through"lower threshold"have many problems of learning and adaptation, their mental health state is general lower。The study in mental health of undergraduates is popular in education, but far less of higher vocational college students.The approach of sampling in stratification within whole groups was adopted to investigate 850 subjects from grade one and grade two in three higher vocational colleges in Shandong Province. The study has investigated sense of academic self-efficacy, ability of social adaptation and mental health. The data was analyzed by SPSS11.5 for windows.The main findings of this study are as follows:1. The mental health state of higher vocational education students is not up to the standards in general.2. The sex main effect of HVE students'mental health state is significant, and male students are lower than that of female students. There is significant interaction between gender and whether only child in ability of social adaptation,and only child is lower than that of not only child in male students.3. The mental health state of HVE students varies with such factors as schools, professions, grades and gender. Private schools, nursing major and computer number control major, grade one, female students are higher.The sense of academic self-efficacy of HVE students varies with such factors as schools, profession and origin. Public schools, students from Countryside is higher, and the sense of academic self-efficacy of literature history major HVE students is higher than that of nursing major. The difference on ability of social adaptation of HVE students is not significant in subgroups.4. There are significant positive relations between academic self-efficacy sense, ability of social adaptation and mental health of HVE students. The sense of academic self-efficacy is positively related to ability of social adaptation of HVE students.5. HVE students'academic self-efficacy sense, ability of social adaptation both has an influence upon their mental health. And the HVE students'sense of academic self-efficacy acts on mental health through the ability of social adaptation.
