This thesis is an attempt to analyze the present situation of ELT and its problems in Xinjiang University of Finance and Economics and to propose a solution to the problems. It is generally agreed that foreign language teaching in XUFE is not much of a success and the traditional teaching methods still hold the prominent position, one of the most serious problems of which is that too much attention is paid to students'linguistic competence, while the significance of the communicative competence is greatly underestimated. As a result, the students may gain high marks in tests but display low communicative competence, and they fail to express themselves in simple English after learning English for nearly a decade. This kind of teaching methods cannot confirm to social development needs of our country.Under such kind of educational circumstance, English teachers in XUFE wish to search for a new teaching method to improve the present situation of ELT in XUFE and help students develop their overall language competence. It is apparent that the traditional teaching methods have a lot of deficiencies in both theory and practice, but exclusively using the communicative teaching method has been proved inappropriate to XUFE due to the existing obstacles: non-native teachers with a lack of English proficiency, traditional practices, various exams, large class sizes, low motivation. Therefore, how to improve the present situation and what is the way out become a hot researching subject in recent years.In this thesis, by means of questionnaire and interview as ways of investigating the present situation of ELT and the problems existing in XUFE, the author tries to find out what is the most appropriate teaching method for students in XUFE. From the responses of 280 students(200 non-majors, 80 majors) and 15 teachers(10 non-specialist teachers and 5 specialist teachers) to the questionnaire, we can see that the integration of the CLT with the TLT is the most appropriate approach to ELT in XUFE, because it could promote the students'overall language competence as well as learning enthusiasm.The paper summarizes by offering some suggestions for ELT in XUFE. In order to attain the teaching objectives and help students to develop their overall language competence, some effective measures and techniques are recommended for consideration and application in the process of teaching.
