Under the background of the economic globalization and China's membership of the WTO, cultural economy and its impacts have become important parts of overall strength of the country. Especially as South Korea, after the government proposing the policy of"culture founds a nation"in 1998, culture industry has developed rapidly. Especially as one of the most important components, the movie industry has developed by leaps and bounds. But as the biggest developing country, China's GDP and population is larger than South Korea. Chinese economy has been advancing at a high speed with a successful 20-year reform and opening; On the other hand, the industrialization of Chinese culture has been severely slowed down, especially the development of movie industry is even more backward, which is not in line with the reputation of economic and cultural giant.First, this paper studies the movie industry's development course and the present situations in China and South Korea. This can make detailed descriptions on development course and the present situation of movie industry in China. Based on these, through using Michael Porter's"diamond theory", this paper has carried on a Comparative analysis to movie industry's international competitiveness in China and South Korea-- from the factor endowments, the demand conditions, the correlative and supporting industry, the strategy, structure and competition of the enterprise, the government and the opportunity and so on six factors, giving some synthetic appraisals. The findings indicate that except having obvious superiority on the demand condition, China has no superiority on other several factors, even mostly is at the start stage, Chinese movie industry belongs to inferiority industry in the overall cultural industry. Meanwhile, according to the movie industry's own characteristics, through using four indexes--the box office income, penetrative ratio, the dependency of export trade and exportation growth superiority index, the paper makes some demonstrative analysis on the movie industry's international competitiveness in China and South Korea. The findings indicate that box office income and the export competitive ability of Chinese movie industry is lower than South Korean. Finally, under the economical globalization condition and according to the enlightenments of movie industry development in South Korean, this paper puts forward some related suggestions for promoting the competitive ability of Chinese movie industry: exerting the function of the government; raising outstanding movie talents; cultivating movie enterprise groups which are provided with synthetic and international competition strength ; Strengthening the correlation of correlative and supported industries, especially paying attention to the exploitation of correlated products; exploiting and developing the countryside and the overseas markets.
