Self-esteem, as the emotional part in self-system, it's a kind of attitude experience towards self-worth and self-competence for oneself. Self-esteem is one of the important indexes of mental health, and it can protect mental health at the meanwhile. In this study, 150 college students (66 impoverished undergraduates, 84 non- impoverished undergraduates) from Liaoning Normal University were used to be research objects. In order to figure out impoverished undergraduates'self-esteem and mental health state, to explore the correlation between self-esteem and mental health, we investigated research objects by using SES scale and SCL-90 scale. Then, the study conducted the self-esteem group training on 16 impoverished undergraduates with low self-esteem. We attempted to explore the effect of self-esteem group training on self-esteem and mental health level and seek for an effective approach to enhance the level of self-esteem and mental health of impoverished undergraduates. The main conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)Impoverished undergraduates'self-esteem and mental health level are lower than that of non- impoverished undergraduates evidently.(2)Impoverished undergraduates'self-esteem is closely related with their mental health. As self-esteem level is high, mental health level is high; on the contrary, as self-esteem level is low, mental health level is low.(3)After the training, the levels of self-esteem and mental health of the impoverished undergraduates who participate self-esteem group training have been enhanced extremely, significant difference existed on the SES scale and SCL-90 scale. This implies that self-esteem group training is effective to enhance the level of self-esteem and mental health of impoverished undergraduates.
