As a special sign of culture, euphemism can reflect certain culture because special kind of culture must stand behind certain language. Since every mode of certain culture of every race has their own characteristics, there exist many distinct differences. While, at the same time, there do exist some similarities in the history, social systems, values, customs, living styles of different races. So the different cultures among the races can be reflected by euphemism in some degree. Based on the previous studies of euphemism, this dissertation would focus on analyzing the influence of the different cultures to euphemism between Chinese and English by comparing and contracting their culture roots, cultural and social values, and formational devices, in order to clear the path of different language communication.The whole dissertation consists of three big chapters. Chapter one can be regarded the main part of this paper. The first part of this section focuses on the comparative study of the culture roots and base of Chinese and English euphemism and the cultural and social values they reflect. While contracting and comparing the similarities and differences of the culture roots, the author analyzes the different cultural and social values such as cultural psychology, religious belief, and political characteristics they provide. The rest of the part persistently adheres to the comparative analysis of the functions of euphemism both in Chinese and English with plenty of examples. At the same time, it points out that the differences between Chinese and English euphemism result from the distinguishing cultures .The second chapter focuses on the formational devices of Chinese and English euphemism. It presents the classification first, contracting the traditional and stylistic euphemism both in Chinese and English. Since the formal studies on euphemism mostly adhere to the similarities among different language and seldom involves in differences, this part presents the differences of formulation as well as similarities, pointing out some unique principles of formation both in English and Chinese. The last chapter analyzes the characteristics of Chinese and English euphemism in the changing world: symbols of era; changeableness; tendency of similarity.In all, the key points and the core of the dissertation lie in the culture differences between Chinese and English and the differences of usages and formation which also caused by the different cultures. Through analyzing the special target, euphemism, which obviously have cultural characteristics, the differences of social and cultural values can be illustrated clearly, which would help to clear the path to cross-cultural understanding and communication.
