The present thesis aims to study vagueness strategies in English-Chinesesimultaneous interpreting from the perspective of translation aesthetics by analyzingthe interpreting work of Chinese simultaneous interpreters and the recordedinterpreting practices of the students majoring in English Interpreting. This thesisbrings forth new ideas of studying vagueness in SI strategies in details from theperspective of translation aesthetics, and makes a feasible combination ofEnglish-Chinese simultaneous interpreting strategies and translation aestheticsvagueness study.In addition to a brief introduction and a conclusion, the thesis consists of threechapters. After a brief introduction to simultaneous interpreting and translationaesthetics, with the emphasis on the characteristics of simultaneous interpreting andthe strategies, the author examines the necessity of vagueness in English-Chinesesimultaneous interpretation, which can be attributed to the essential feature oflanguage, i.e. vagueness, the characteristics of simultaneous interpreting and theaesthetic complex of Chinese culture. A further elaboration is made on the applicationof simultaneous interpreting strategies under the guidance of vagueness, focusing onthe relationship between simultaneous interpreting skills and vagueness/accuratenessand the application of transference between vagueness and accurateness inEnglish-Chinese simultaneous interpretation practice.The author concludes that the principle of vagueness in translation aesthetics canbe put into use in English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting, and puts forward someEnglish-Chinese SI vagueness strategies which fit for the aesthetical habit andlanguage habit of Chinese people. It is hoped that this study may shed some light onfuture studies and also be beneficial to simultaneous interpreting practices in general.
