This paper focuses on research of nonverbal communication in teaching including the definition, categorization, characteristics and function of such communication through study of existing research results of home and abroad and the author's own teaching experiences, to explore how to enhance the abilities of teachers to use ways other than verbal language such as facial expression, body language, gesture, eye contact and adjustment of tone and rhythms in teaching. The nonverbal expression system in teaching consists of complementary expression system, body-language expression system and expression system of time and space. Nonverbal communication in teaching has its own prominent characteristics. For example, it is bidirectional, instantaneous, changeable and continuous; it plays an assistant role in transmitting of message, and is vague in the meaning of message transmitted; it owns flexibility in the ways of message transmitting and uncertainty in the capacity of messages transmitted. The nonverbal communication adopted by teachers especially in Chinese classes helps to strengthen the effect of verbal expression, increase the volume of information expressed, stimulate the learning interests of students and improve the teaching effect in classroom. Nonverbal communication is also effective in improving the communication of feelings and thoughts between teachers and students and the management of classroom teaching activities; What's more, it is useful in building role models in teaching through building better images of teachers and helps students to develop better behaviors in classes. This paper also emphasizes that teachers should also be able to interpret the nonverbal feedbacks given by students apart from using nonverbal communication methods in teaching. Only in this way can the effect of nonverbal communication be fully reached. This paper also explores several ways for teachers to enhance their abilities of nonverbal communication including having a serious attitude, renewing relevant knowledge timely, having a good command of the vocabulary and techniques used in nonverbal communication, following commonly-used principles of nonverbal communication, enriching teaching experiences, enhancing abilities of nonverbal communication and improving themselves in all aspects. In a word, to fully manifest their teaching ability in classes especially in Chinese classes, teachers must be good at using nonverbal communication methods. And to enhance their abilities in using the art of nonverbal communication and make full use of nonverbal communication in classes, teachers must improve themselves in all aspects.
