ObjectivesTo study the basic data of coping styles and behavioral inhibition of medical students and analyze the influence of different background,such as gender,grade income etc.Then further analyze the relationship between two of them in order to give a scientific foundation for the psychological consultation and education among medical students.Methods413 clinical students were investigated by the Coping Style and College Students Behavioral Inhibition Scale(CBIS),and by using the ways of desciptive statistics, analysis of variance,and ANOVA methods to explore the influence of different background variable to the coping styles and behavioral inhibition and the relationship between two of them.ResultsMedical students mainly selected the mature coping styles,and the descending sub-scale were solving problem,recourse,fantasy,retreat,rationalization,and remorse.As for Coping Style,there was a significant difference on solving problem (t=2.36,P<0.05) and recourse(t=-2.07,P<0.05) in gender of medical students, and there was a significant difference on fantasy(F=4.10,P<0.05) and rationalization(F=3.23,P<0.05) in grade,and there was a significant difference on fantasy(F=2.30,P<0.05) in income.Medical students mainly selected the inhibition of help-seeking of the behavioral inhibition,and the descending sub-scale were the inhibiton of dominate,alienation, refuse,self-confidence,intimacy. As for CBIS,there was a significant difference on the inhibition of refuse (t=2.126,P<0.05) and alienation(t=2.384,P<0.05) in gender of medical students, and there was a significant difference on the total CBIS(F=3.272,P<0.05),and the inhibition of help-seeking(F=8.306,P<0.01),intimacy(F=3.947,P<0.05) in grade, and there was a significant difference on the inhibition of intimacy(t=2.054,P<0.05) between only child-family and many children-family,and there was a significant difference on inhibition of dominate(t=-2.755,P<0.01) between city-resource and countryside-resource,and there was a significant difference on the total CBIS(F=2.800, P<0.01),and the inhibition of help-seeking(F=2.831,P<0.01),domonate(F=2.266, P<0.05),intimacy(F=4.830,P<0.01) in income.Using six forcast variables(coping factors) to forcast criterion validity variable(total CBIS),there were five significant variables in regression equation: fantasy,recourse,rationalization,remorse and retreat,and the multiple R is 0.59, which could explain associatedly 0.35 of the whole variable,therefor the standardize regression equation is:the behavioral inhibition = 0.18×fantasy-0.27×recourse+ 0.18×rationalization+0.18×remorse+ 0.14×retreat.ConclusionsMedical students had a mature ways of coping in whole,meanwhile mainly selected the inhibiton of help-seeking of the whole behavioral inhibiton.Grade and income were important variables for both coping styles and behavioral inhibition.Fantasy,recourse,rationalization,remorse and retreat had a significant forecast effect for behavioral inhibition,which were key variables influencing behavioral inhibition of medical students.There are three suggestions for mental health education of medical students.First of all,the psycho-intervention should have a different key point for different grades.Secondly,we should focus on the mental health of extraordinarily poor students.Thirdly,coping styles could be a way of reliefing the behavioral inhibition,we could reinforce the mature coping styles(sloving problems) and reduce the immature coping styles(fantasy,remorse and retreat) to improve the conditions of behavioral inhibition.
